Real Chicago Gets Deep

It was 1943.

It was a man by the name of Ike Sewell.

It was within the walls of the Pizzeria Uno where it…. became a legend. A Real Chicago staple.

It was a pizza. No ordinary pizza, mind you. Contrary to the thin crusted pizzas crafted in Italy and replicated in many places around the world, this was a pizza by Chicago, for Chicago, and a gift to all those skeptics from around the world who thought to themselves, “pizza….eaten with a fork? Forgetaaaboutittt.”

Well, you won’t forget about it. We guarantee.

A buttery, flaky crust that rises an inch or more above the plate and surrounds a DEEP pile of toppings–Cheese, sausage (sheet or crumble), pepperoni, peppers, onions, mushrooms, spinach, whatever your heart desires, Chicago will make your pizza a pie, and keep you coming back for more.  Since the 1950s celebrities such as  Frank Sinatra, Jimmy Durante, and baseball star Joe DiMaggio have frequented Chicago and often  found themselves with fork and knife in hand, enjoying this famed Chicago meal.

From the Northside to the Southside, Lakeshore to West Loop, you’ll find a vast array of authentic pizza joints where some of the above mentioned figures have frequented (hint: most have their pictures/signatures hanging on their walls). Whether you have a favorite, or are a Deep Dish dining novice, one thing is certain, all remain true to Sewell’s original 1943 design. And yes, he is an architect.

The list of pizza places in Chicago is extensive, so we abbreviated a bit with the listings below. Most places reside within walking or distance of The Drake Hotel, some with alternative restaurants in the loop or the surrounding neighborhoods.
